An Attitude of Gratitude
Dr. Foster Mobley // Quotables, Wisdom Leading
Q: Do we show up with our teams in a way that expresses our gratitude?
Gift-giving usually falls into one of two categories: obligation or gratitude.
We've all given gifts out of obligation, but it doesn't seem quite like giving does it? The ubiquitous holiday bonus or the wedding gift for that couple you hardly know seem more like payments than presents. But a gift given out of gratitude is a joy all its own, whether we are the giver or the recipient.
True gratefulness is all but forgotten in business and teams. We work hard, we produce much; it's what we're all supposed to do. But shouldn't we show our gratitude to each member of our team for all that they give? Shouldn't our model be one of joy rather than duty?
President John F. Kennedy had a profound perspective on this subject, "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."
